The seventeenth century Genoa galley
Life on-board the galleys in the naval Dockyard of the Republic of Genoa.
The visitor of Galata Museo del Mare can step on-board the seventeenth century Genoa galley that since the opening of the Museum, represents one of the most thrilling and characteristic reconstructions at natural sizes.
The “Sali a bordo della Galea” is located in the new exhibition space on the ground floor called “la vita a bordo delle galee e nell’Arsenale della Repubblica di Genova” (the life on-board the galleys and in the naval Dockyard of the Republic of Genoa).
In this exhibition space, the visitor becomes ”visit-actor”: after having explored the Naval dockyard, he can step on-board the Galley until the rowing bridge, in order to explore the interiors and discover the life on-board, personifying a member of the crew of his choice, among slaves, hard labour workers, buonavoglia.
He can interact with the typical figures of that age, like galley-sergeants and papassi; assist an animated discussion between the Senator, Captain and Shipwright; study in details some aspects of the life on-board, in the ”Ludoteca della Galea”; view findings and rare works of that age, that complete the journey through time.
